This historic blend is linked to Ben Nevis and Tormore, and named after a notorious bootlegger. Still in production as Long John Special Reserve, this long-established standard blend was named after the legendary ‘Long John’ Macdonald, who founded Ben Nevis distillery. Its malt was supposedly a key ingredient, though Long John’s core later became Tormore, which began distilling in 1961.

Distillery History:

Early Origins & The Legend of Long John McDonald

The whisky takes its name from Long John McDonald, a towering figure in Scottish distilling lore. Born in the late 18th century, McDonald was a smuggler-turned-legal-distiller during a time when illicit whisky production was rampant in the Highlands. His imposing height earned him the nickname "Long John," and his reputation for quality spirits laid the groundwork for the brand.

By the early 19th century, as whisky production became more regulated, legal distilleries began to dominate. In 1825, the firm Macdonald, Greenlees & Williams was established in Glasgow, blending and bottling Scotch whisky. Though not directly owned by McDonald himself, the company capitalized on his legend by naming their whisky Long John—a nod to both his stature and his legacy as a skilled distiller.

Rise Under DCL & Global Expansion

In 1911, the Distillers Company Limited (DCL)—a conglomerate that would later evolve into Diageo—acquired Macdonald, Greenlees & Williams, bringing Long John into its vast portfolio. Under DCL, the brand flourished, becoming one of the first blended Scotch whiskies to achieve widespread export success.

During the Prohibition era (1920–1933) in the U.S., Long John, like many Scotch brands, saw a surge in demand through smuggling and later legal sales once Prohibition ended. By the mid-20th century, it was a well-known name in Europe, particularly in Germany, France, and Scandinavia, where blended Scotch was gaining popularity.

The Golden Age (1950s–1970s)

Long John’s peak came in the post-war decades, when blended Scotch dominated the market. The brand was known for its smooth, approachable taste, making it a favorite among casual drinkers and a staple in bars worldwide.

A key factor in its recognition was its distinctive bottle design—tall and slender, evoking the image of the legendary Long John himself. This unique packaging helped it stand out on shelves.

In 1975, the brand was sold to Seagram, the Canadian drinks giant, which further expanded its global reach. Seagram marketed Long John aggressively, particularly in Latin America and Asia, where Scotch whisky was becoming a symbol of sophistication.

Decline & Changing Ownership

The 1980s and 1990s saw a shift in whisky trends, with single malts gaining prestige and blended brands like Long John losing ground. Seagram’s financial troubles in the late 1990s led to the sale of many of its whisky assets.

In 2005, after Pernod Ricard acquired Allied Domecq (which had absorbed Long John), the brand’s production was significantly reduced. Today, Long John is a rare sight, mostly found in niche markets or as a collector’s item.

Legacy & Modern Status

Though no longer a major player, Long John remains a historically significant brand—one of the early pioneers of blended Scotch whisky. Its name still evokes nostalgia among older whisky drinkers, and vintage bottles are sought after by collectors.
