Product Description:
A scarce 1990s Portuguese market bottling of Glentromie Blended Malt, carrying the name of the long-lost Glentromie Distillery (Speyside, closed 1931). Such bottlings were likely blends containing spirit from other Speyside distilleries, using the historic name for heritage appeal.
Official Tasting Notes
Not available – no official records survive for this export-only blend. Likely a light, mellow Speyside style with subtle sherry and malt notes, typical of 1990s blended malts.
History of Glentromie Distillery
The Glentromie Distillery, nestled in the heart of the Speyside region, has a rich history that dates back to the mid-20th century. The idea of establishing a single malt distillery came to industry legend George Christie in the 1950s. Prior to this, Christie had built the North of Scotland grain plant in Clackmannan.
Key Milestones:
- 1957: George Christie builds a grain distillery in Clackmannan.
- 1962: Christie orders the construction of a malt distillery near Kingussie.
- 1987: The distillery is completed, 30 years after the initial building plans.
- 1990: Speyside Distillery, which produces Glentromie, begins producing single malt whisky.
- 2000: Speyside Distilleries is sold to a private investment group, including Christie’s son, Ricky, Ian Jerman, and Sir James Ackroyd.
- 2001: The first official release of Speyside 10-Year-Old.
- 2013: The distillery is sold to Harvey’s of Edinburgh.
- 2014: Harvey’s releases a new range, Spey from Speyside distillery, predominantly in Taiwan.
The distillery, one of the most southerly of the Speyside triangle, has been a quiet player in the world of single malt. It has a pair of stills originally installed in the Loch side distillery but were cut down to fit into their new surroundings. The whisky-making process here is taken at a relaxed pace, resulting in a light style.
Legacy and Influence: The mature spirit from Glentromie has appeared in blends across Asia, launched in Mongolia, and is part of a single malt range called ‘Spey’ in Taiwan. The distillery’s whisky has also been added to neutral spirit to produce Bhutanese whisky.
The Glentromie Distillery’s journey from its inception to its current status reflects the dedication and vision of its founders and owners, contributing significantly to the rich tapestry of Scotch whisky heritage.
