In 1870, Maurice Hennessy created Hennessy X.O for his circle of friends and introduced a new style of cognac. Hennessy X.O is the Original, the emblematic icon of the Hennessy Maison.
Deep and powerful, the eaux-de-vie of this Hennessy X.O cognac are aged in young barrels and marked out by their power and energy, but also by their capacity to achieve a great roundness through time.
Tasting notes;
Appearance/colour; Clear and bright, with a deep amber hue.
Nose; Embraced by flavours of candied fruit.
Palate; Perception of a strong spicy cognac note, tantalising the lips and palate with its distinct peppery flavour intertwined with a hint of chocolate.
Finish: A wave of warmth grows, crests and then breaks. A robust presence, full and voluptuous, is felt.
Distillery History:
Hennessy: A Legacy of Cognac Excellence
The Hennessy cognac distillery was established in 1765 by Richard Hennessy, an Irish Jacobite military officer who had served in the army of King Louis XV of France. After retiring, Hennessy settled in the Cognac region and began producing and exporting high-quality brandies—first to the United Kingdom and his native Ireland, soon followed by the United States.
In 1813, Richard’s son, James Hennessy, officially named the business Jas Hennessy & Co. He also appointed Jean Fillioux as the house’s first Master Blender—a pivotal decision that began a remarkable partnership. To this day, the Fillioux family has held the role of Master Blender for eight generations, continuing a collaboration that has lasted over 250 years.
By the 1840s, Hennessy had become the world’s leading exporter of brandy, a title it retains to this day. By 1860, one out of every four bottles of cognac sold internationally bore the Hennessy name.
Hennessy has also played a pioneering role in shaping the cognac industry. It was among the first producers to sell cognac in bottles rather than barrels, a move that helped it weather the Great French Wine Blight of the 19th century. Additionally, Hennessy introduced several key classification standards still in use today, including the star rating system and the now-universal V.S.O.P. and X.O. designations.
