The Macallan AERA Royal Black is a unique Taiwanese release from Scotland’s most famous distillery. With good reason, the release has been surrounded by a lot of hype.
This dram is aged in a combination of European and American oak casks, following the latest Macallan trend of moving away from exclusively sherry cask matured whisky, but there is no doubt that the signature sherried style is still present. The precious sherry cask oak was grown in the forests of northern Spain and Jerez in southern Spain before being dried for four years, made into wooden barrels, and then sedated for two years before being filled with Sherry. This process is carried out in accordance with strict guidelines established by Macallan’s Master of Wood, and it results in supreme quality casks that have a dramatic impact on the distillery’s exceptional spirit.
Tasting notes;
Appearance/colour; Warm Ember.
Nose; Direct seasoned sherry and chocolate top note followed on by width-y fresh gummy candies, raspberries, cranberries, pineapple, apple, orange, and you just get this candies laden going on for few minutes. Though hint of waxed meat but faint. Vanilla cream.
Palate; Oddly sweet, sort sugary rum-ish, scents of bourbon oak with oozes of sour plum, honey and assam boi, soya.
Finish: Sweetness and soft all the way.
Distillery History: The Macallan’s Six Pillars are intended to represent the foundation of the brand and its approach to making whisky. The pillars are Natural Colour, Mastery, Curiously Small Spirit Stills, The Estate, Exceptional Oak Casks and Sherry Seasoning.
Every Macallan single malt reveals the unrivalled commitment to the mastery of wood and spirit for which The Macallan has been known since it was established in 1824. It is an expression of our enduring desire to go beyond ordinary, to seek out the extraordinary, and create peerless single malts.
With an unflinching commitment to put sherry casks at the heart of The Macallan single malt, our reputation for the extraordinary is testament to the exceptional oak casks in which we mature our spirit. Sourced, crafted, toasted and seasoned under the watchful eye of The Macallan Master of Wood, these hand-picked casks are delivered to the demanding specifications of The Macallan Master Distiller and his team.
Once filled, the maturing spirit remains undisturbed in the same casks for the necessary number of years it needs to be worthy of its destined Macallan expression. It is these oak casks that make the greatest contribution to the quality, natural color and distinctive aromas and flavors which lie at the heart of The Macallan single malt.
