Tasting notes;
Appearance/colour; Light Gold.
Nose; Sweet honey and candied fruits, old cough syrup (menthol) and caramel. It reminds me a little of Fisherman's Friends cough sweets but more subtle. Finally peaches in syrup.
Palate; Nice first attack, I thought it was thin but then the tongue gets coated in sweetness. Sweet with a sherbet fizz and a little salted caramel but actually it's more like peanut brittle.
Finish: approaching medium length with a nice coffee sweetness.
Distillery History:
Match Whisky is a lesser-known brand of blended Scotch whisky, primarily bottled by Burn Brae (Blenders) for the Italian market. While detailed historical information about the brand is limited, available records indicate that Match Whisky was bottled for Fratelli Branca Distillerie S.p.A. in Milan, Italy. This association suggests that Match Whisky was part of a broader portfolio of spirits distributed by Fratelli Branca, a company renowned for its iconic Fernet-Branca amaro.
Notable Bottling
One of the documented expressions is the Match Whisky 08-year-old BBBl, an 8-year-old blended Scotch whisky bottled at 43% ABV. This particular bottling was produced for Branca Bros Ltd., indicating a focus on the Italian market. Another expression, simply titled Match Whisky Blended Scotch Whiskies, was bottled at 40% ABV and also intended for the Italian market. Both expressions were bottled by Burn Brae (Blenders), though specific details about the distillery's operations and history remain scarce.
Brand Legacy
Given the limited information and the niche market presence, Match Whisky appears to have been a brand tailored for specific regional markets, particularly Italy. Its association with Fratelli Branca suggests it was part of a curated selection of spirits aimed at complementing the company's existing offerings.
