Toki means "time" in Japanese. It's a concept rich in meaning the world over, but particularly in Japan where respect for tradition and reinvention sparks a powerful creative energy. Inspired by that interplay, Suntory Whisky Toki brings together old and new – the House of Suntory's proud heritage and its innovative spirit – to create blended Japanese whisky that is both groundbreaking and timeless.

Distillery History;
Origins
1899 — Shinjiro Torii, a young entrepreneur, founded Torii Shoten in Osaka, originally selling imported wines. He later rebranded as Kotobukiya in 1921, which would evolve into Suntory.
Birth of Japanese Whisky
1923 — Torii founded Yamazaki Distillery, Japan’s first malt whisky distillery, near Kyoto. He chose Yamazaki for its ideal humid climate and pure water source. 1929 — Launched Shirofuda (White Label), the first genuine Japanese whisky — initially not very successful due to its strong Scotch-like style unfamiliar to Japanese palates.
Growth and Innovation
Over the decades, Suntory refined its whisky to suit Japanese tastes — smoother, subtler, more delicate. 1973 — Opened the Hakushu Distillery, located in the forests of Japan’s Southern Alps. Suntory expanded into blended whiskies, single malts, and premium lines — helping to define the modern Japanese whisky style.
Global Recognition
Suntory’s whiskies gained worldwide acclaim for their craftsmanship and balance. Hibiki, Yamazaki, and Hakushu brands have won many international awards. In 2014, Suntory acquired the American bourbon company Beam Inc., forming Beam Suntory, making it one of the largest spirits companies globally.
Legacy
Today, Suntory is synonymous with Japanese whisky’s rise to world-class status. It remains a leader in innovation, sustainability, and blending Eastern and Western whisky traditions.
